NP Krka

Zaton near Sibenik - NP Krka

Proclaimed a national park in 1985; it is the seventh national park in Croatia. It occupies an area of 111 km2 along the course of the Krka River, two kilometres downstream from Knin to Skradin, and the lower course of the Cikola. The travertine, limestone sediment from water, which builds the travertine curtains, sills, beards and other geomorphologic forms, is the fundamental phenomenon and principal feature of the National Park. The falls are a biodynamic creation, the living travertine constantly growing today as well, through the sedimentation process.

The Krka River rises at the foot of Mt Dinara not far from Knin. With the drowned part of the mouth, it is about 72 km long. The total area of its basin is 2,088 km2. The mean annual flow across Skradinski buk (waterfall) is 55 m3/s, and when there are heavy rains in the hinterland this can rise to over 350 m3/s. Krka, with its seven travertine falls of Bilusica buk (22.4 m), Corica buk or Brljan (15.5 m), Manojlovacki slapovi (a series of falls 59.6 m high with a main step of 32 m), Rosnjak (8.4 m), Miljacka slap (23.8 m), Roski slap (25.5 m) and Skradinski buk (17 steps with a total height of 45.7 m), and a total drop of 242 m, is a phenomenon of nature and the karst. Along its course through the karstic Dinaric Alps, the Krka Rivera cut out a beautiful canyon containing breathtaking waterfalls and rapids, all immersed in rich vegetation. The highest fall is called Skradinski Buk (46 m).

The islet of Visovac is also worth visiting. Lying on a place where the Krka flows into a lake, Visovac represents a true oasis of peace and quiet with its old Franciscan monastery that dates back to the fifteenth century. It was built in 1445. Rich cultural and historical heritage of the convent is exposed in the museum has original historic documents, rare incunabula and other object of historic, artistic and ethnographic value.

The entrance in Skradin is foreseen for the visitors who come by waterway or traffic road and they want to reach Skradinski buk by boat. The official car park in Skradin has been provided for motor vehicles and tourist coaches. The landing - stage from which the boats of the Public Institution National Park Krka depart, is situated 50 to 150 m from the car park. The visitors who reach Skradin by their own vessels must be anchored on the anchorage in front of Skradin or in ACI marina in Skradin.

The sailing upstream from the bridge of Skradin (Skradinski most) is forbidden for all the vessels, except for the vessels of the Public Institution National Park “Krka”. The transport of the visitors from Skradin to Skradinski buk by boats of the Public Institution National Park “Krka” is included in price of the entrance ticket in NP “Krka”.
The time of navigation from Skradin to Skradinski buk is 25 minutes in one direction. The vesels set off from Skradin every full hour, whereas they return on every half of every hour.

Climate along shores of Krka changes from spring to estuary. It is continental at the beginning; sub Mediterranean in the middle, and Mediterranean in the end.
