First written information about the population in Zaton is from 1709. Stosic quotes that then Zaton has had 17 houses and 97 inhabitants. Average is 5,7 per household. In 1774 Zaton has had 54 houses and 260 persons (the average 4,8). Through those 65 years it has had the rate of growth from around 3% yearly. As much the economy has been based on the poor base, it wasn’t the limiting factor for the population. Brakes for growth of the population were the war troubles with Turks and epidemics which they have followed. Zaton has shared the health destiny of neighboring Sibenik. From Sibenik chances it was possible to estimate the situation in Zaton.
In 15th century the plague has attacked Sibenik 10 times. In 16th century eight times. Even the duke escaped from town. Facts about that were obtained later from Venice, where people of Sibenik were sending their appeals for the help. One of their sentences was: ''Town stays deserted” (Dr. Mirko Drazen Grmek: Sibenik memory-anthology). Frequent have been years of hunger, mentioned in 1529, 1546, 1561 and 1570. According to data from Dr. Stjepo Obad’s book, Sibenik memory-anthology, comparison of population movement in few Sibenik settlements made some interesting data. On the economy and population in Zlarin and Prvic has influenced the occupation and other activities, besides agricultures in the previous period. The direct danger from Turks had been there less significant.
So the population was able to hold on.
After the decay of old vine and regression of fishing trade came to the emigration and rash decrease of population. The other strike for these places was ruined sailboats, which couldn’t be compensated by the ''navigation'' on foreign ships. Lack of Zaton in the earlier period had been the traffic isolation. On the land only horses and pedestrians, and at sea only direct connections without handy. Settlements on the land part of municipality most have been maintained by the winegrowing.
