Curiosities - Hill Tradanj

Curiosities
Zaton near Sibenik - Tradanj

Around 3 km between Lake Prukljan and Sibenik Bridge extends long canal of St. Josephs. On the right side of Krka’s coast raises the hill TRADANJ, about a hundred meters high; steep, vertical mass, similar to Kornat’s cliffs. Stone has yellowish red tones, unlike the grey neighborhood. Northeast side of the hill is monotonously steep and rises from the river under the angle of 60 degrees. On that side is the entrance in the prehistoric cave. People from Zaton have warned the local teacher Frane Scarpa about it and in 1888 he started to explore it as the archeologist amateur. He made public his discoveries in Bulic ''Buletin''. Later the cave was visited and investigated by archeologists from local institutions and from leading centers.

Tracks of life in this cave have been explored by member of academy, prof. dr. Mirko MALEZ, but his work unfortunately still has not been made public. In the Sibenik museum is considerable number of objects found in this cave. Tracks of human living, towards past discoveries, as prof. Marko Mendjusic says, reaches to five thousands of years B.C. Peak of the hill Tradanj makes the small plateau around 4000 m2. In the past century day laborers from Sibenik Dolac have cultivated here the vineyard. The surface is surrounded from three sides by large tumulus on which is able to find enough fragments of ceramics. From the peak is possible by rocky path to come down to the cave.

The important condition for life, drinking-water, have had in the old well on the neighboring hill above the cove Ljuta. People from Dolac, descendants of Nikola Bujas - Blazev, have cultivable the land around the old well. A little lower, on the sunny side above Krka, they have had the house - flat in order to deal with the cattle breeding and fishing trade. In 1942 Italian fascists have set fire to their house and destroyed the economy.

Only the name of Tradanj remains unknown. Is this twisted form of the name Trajan? Towards data which brings Kresimir Cvrljak 1., there are traces that Trajan’s fleet has sailed towards Skradin when he has departed in the war on Dacane. Presumably Trajan has been in Skradin. In the same cave, Scarpa has found Trajan’s coin. The story goes how on the south side of Tradanj, on the sea surface among cliffs of Krka, exists the spot on which the multiple echoes can be heard. Not even this phenomenon has been investigated.
