Zaton near Sibenik - Mediterranean monk seal

The big statue of Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus albiventer, sea monk, sea man, did Marin) have been set and decorates the shore in Zaton. It has been made in 1979, when was the trademark of Mediterranean games (in Zaton had been maintained the competition in rowing and kayak).

In Zaton valley, in the canal of St. Josip and in Lake Prukljan often could be seen the Mediterranean monk seal. Sibenik people, Juraj Sizgoric and Petar Divnic have mentioned it in the sixteenth century. In 1627 one foreign author wrote that near Sibenik has been caught the ''sea devil'' during Pope Eugenie. ''Unter DM Pabst Eugenio (bei Statt Sebenico) the in DM Illirischeh Merr (the ein solcher Meerteufel gefangen werden) welcher einem Knaben in DAS Meer gezogen haben''.

Up to thirtieth years of twentieth century older people have warned their children not to go far at the seaside because they will be couth by did Marin. Fisherman would often see the monk seal. They didn’t like them because they would tear their nets and eat large amounts of quality fish (per 20 to 30 kg daily). In 1907 and 1908 with nets of the family of Vice Mrsa, Zaton fishermen have caught two samples of Mediterranean monk seal on the fishing ''place'' - '' Bubic''.

This one from 1908, 180 kg heavy and 2 meters long, has been imprisoned in the wooden trunk and shown in towns all up to Vienna. As the monk seal died, with the earned money, brothers Vice and Mile Mrsa have continued to trade the wine in Vienna and deal with the catering industry.

For the refuge, in which stays during the day (by night goes hunting) the monk seal uses natural caves, but such in which can swim into or enter below the water. On the land is difficultly mobile. As it breathes with lungs, in the cave needs the air and dry surfaces on which rests and raises the young.
