Velika Mrdakovica - Arauzona |

According to the finds and its position, some identify Velika Mrdakovica with Arauzona, a Liburnian settlement described by Plinius in his travelogues. Judging by the rich finds of metal buckles and jewelry, old money and fragments of glass and ceramics, it is quite safe to say this is true.
This important Liburnian / Roman settlement with a necropolis was situated on one of the Roman roads connecting Iadera (Zadar) with Salona; the oldest layers date back to the 4th century BC, and the more recent layers go back to the 3rd century, i.e. the era of the Roman rule. This testifies to the
fact that this locality was continuously inhabited. A group of residential buildings was found at the locality, made of finely dressed stone joint by clay, and afterwards plaster. Some buildings had rain tanks carved in stone.
The settlement was divided by streets and bounded with walls made of crushed stone. The most valuable thing of the locality are various finds of painted glass kitchenware, which are considered to be the most valuable finds of its kind on the territory of the Roman Empire. The finds are kept in Sibenik Town Museum.
ROMAN ENCLOSURE
At the foot of the hill where Arauzona settlement used to be situated, there was a natural trap for collection of rainwater. Residents of Arauzona covered it with arches, leaving a few openings for inflow of precipitation waters. The enclosure, or Turkish reservoir as the people of Vodice incorrectly call it, is still used for watering cattle and nearby olive groves. |
